2009 / This is the second D+S pavilion dedicated to the phenomenon of rain.
It was commissioned as a permanent feature for the new campus of King Abdullah
University of Science and Technology (KAUST), on the shores of the Red Sea.
This small building is cast in stone and covered with green ceramic tiles the colour of
sphagnum moss; the building contains a sound archive of 21 days of rain recorded
across Scotland. In Scotland there is an abundance of rain that takes many forms
from fine mist to heavy thunderstorms. Since 1995 it has rained somewhere in Scotland
every day. Saudi Arabia receives one of two days of rainfall a year and much of their
fresh water is now being extracted from seawater through desalination plants.
