Title: In The Open Sea 2002

Project Description:
The title for this work comes from the opening image of the film, an aquarium exhibit of a shoal of herring swimming in circles around their confines. The piece continues with an array of views that present aspects of the wilder world we inhabit, of how we access (and by implication control) these spaces. A pack of wolves are viewed pacing back and forth behind a zoo’s perimeter fence, a man cuts steps into a glacier ready for the tread of the summer visitors. In The Open Sea has a slow hypnotic pace that is both captivating and unnerving, qualities often associated with Dalziel + Scullion’s work. Their film concludes with a slow pan back of a walker viewed standing alone at the foot of an imposing vertical rocky backdrop, not until the pan is complete do we read the smallness of this figure against this vast expanse of geological time.

This is an edition of three.
