Title:
Rain 2000
Project
Description:
A temporary structure that exists outdoors as a
source of light during the wintry month of October through to December,
and looked at the phenomenon of winter weather, in particular of Rain.
The structure was constructed in simple materials, plastic cladding that
refracted sun light during the day and could be projected onto at night,
a tin roof amplified the sound of the falling rain before conveying this
into a collecting pool at the rear. The structure consisted of a five-meter
cube that was entered by a long sloping ramp, it was clad in a type of
translucent plastic; the cube was raised slightly off the ground, to accommodate
the six-meter square collecting pool that slid partly underneath the main
structure. In the evenings a stylised pattern of rain was projected onto
the translucent walls of the pavilion, creating an ambient space in which
to sit. Even in the visible absence of Rain, the mere presence of the
platform and the knowledge of its function, kept the memory of the Rain
alive.
